Why We Chose the Great Bear Forest Carbon Project
The Great Bear Forest Carbon Project is located in the heart of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest covering an extraordinary 6.4 million hectares. Known as one of the largest intact coastal temperate rainforests in the world, this area is considered a global ecological treasure. The area is rich with towering ancient trees and a diverse array of wildlife including salmon, grizzly bears, wolves, cougars, and the iconic Kermode Bear, also known as the Spirit Bear.
However, what makes the Great Bear Rainforest truly unique is its deep connection to the Indigenous communities. Being the first carbon project in North America on traditional territory, the Gitga’at, Kitasoo/Xai’xais, Heiltsuk, and other Coastal First Nations have lived in harmony with the forest. Their traditional knowledge and practices have ensured the preservation of this vibrant ecosystem. At MARANT, we recognize that to support our sustainability goals, we need to include honouring and empowering the communities who are integral to the forest’s health and vitality.
How the Project Works
The Great Bear Forest Carbon Project prevents deforestation and promotes sustainable forest management. By generating carbon credits through these efforts, this project ensures that significant amounts of carbon dioxide remain stored within the forest’s biomass, keeping it out of our atmosphere.
