MARANT’s Commitment to the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project: Supporting Local Communities

TORONTO, ON – August 22, 2024 – As part of our ongoing efforts and commitment to sustainability, MARANT Construction is pleased to announce its support for the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project. Through our partnership with Carbonzero, we are joining the commitment to preserve this vital ecosystem.

The Niagara Escarpment, a natural treasure, supports diverse plant and animal life and serves as a crucial water source for millions of people. Our investment in this project helps safeguard this irreplaceable resource while advancing our goal of a carbon-neutral future.

Why We Chose the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project

The Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project spans from New York State through Ontario to Manitoba. In Ontario, it covers the Niagara Peninsula, extends to Tobermory, and includes Manitoulin Island. This region features one of the oldest forest ecosystems in eastern North America and is home to protected species such as Pileated Woodpeckers, Painted Turtles, and Great Grey Owls.

Our decision to support this project was driven by several key factors: protecting biodiversity by safeguarding rare and endangered species, mitigating climate change through carbon dioxide absorption, and supporting local communities in Ontario. The project is managed by the Escarpment Biosphere Conservancy, a registered charity dedicated to maintaining, enhancing, and restoring native species and natural habitats while promoting scientific research and education.

At MARANT, we understand that achieving our sustainability goals requires not only protecting significant landmarks but also supporting the local communities that are essential to preserving and managing these areas. By supporting the Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project, we are helping to create jobs, provide educational opportunities, and raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation.

How the Project Works

The Niagara Escarpment Forest Carbon Project aims to conserve existing forests and restore degraded areas by planting native trees, controlling invasive species, and implementing sustainable forestry practices. These conservation efforts enhance forest cover and generate carbon credits by keeping large quantities of carbon dioxide stored in the forest’s biomass instead of releasing it into the atmosphere. The project addresses various land conditions, from highly productive forestland to open grasslands and Alvar conditions with shallow soils.

By purchasing carbon credits to safeguard this valuable resource, MARANT offsets our operational emissions and contributes to the ongoing conservation of the Niagara Escarpment and the local communities involved in its maintenance.

Investing in a Sustainable Future

Our commitment to the Niagara Escarpment Carbon Project reflects MARANT’s dedication to environmental sustainability and community well-being. By offsetting our carbon footprint and striving for carbon neutrality, we are focused on making choices that promote long-term sustainability for future generations.
